Heartland Coatings offers full service preparation and powder coat finishing for all your project needs.

There are many factors that contribute to a professional powder coating finish for any refinished item or new part.

Estimating the finishing cost for your project is based on answering the following six questions about your item/part.

  • Does the item/part require cleaning to remove excessive grease or dirt build up?

Prior to powder coating, all grease and dirt must be removed to allow the powder to adhere to the item's surface.  For new parts/items, this is generally not an issue.  However, some automotive parts must be cleaned in solvent to remove grease and grime for initial preparation of the part.  Heartland Coatings charges $65 per hour for solvent washing when required.

  • Is the item/part disassembled and ready for finishing?

All items to be powder coated must be disassembled for proper surface preparation and product integrity.  Powder coating requires oven temperatures in excess of 400 degrees Fahrenheit, making it very important to remove any pieces of your item that may not tolerate high temperature exposure.  Additionally, any part of your item that you do not wish to be powder coated must be removed or taped off before finishing.  Heartland Coatings charges $65 per hour for disassembling your item/part when required.

  • Does the item/part require sandblasting or chemical stripping for surface preparation?

For a smooth finish, new metal parts may need to be sandblasted prior to powder coating to remove welding slag and other rough surfaces.  Likewise, items that have an existing finish or weathered/rusted items being refurbished must be brought back to a fresh metal surface for adherence of the powder coating.

  • Is a clear coat required for your finish?

Most powder coating projects only need a single coat of powder to provide a durable, UV protected finish.  However, some powder types such as dormant colors or metallics, require a clear coat to add both depth and protection to the specialty coating style.  Clear coating costs are based on the amount of surface area to be coated, as well as the level of difficulty in handling the item/part during the finishing process.

  • What is the size of the item to be coated?

Powder coating costs are dependent on the amount of surface area to be coated, as well as the level of difficulty in handling the item/part during the finishing process.

  • How many colors do you want?
